The National Center for Urban School Transformation (NCUST) honored five Aldine ISD schools — Aldine High School, Aldine Ninth Grade School, MacArthur High School, Mendel Elementary School and Stehlik Intermediate School — for being named Excellence in Education Award winners during separate presentations on Tuesday, May 21.

Aldine Ninth, MacArthur High and Stehlik Intermediate were named Silver Star winners, while Mendel Elementary and Aldine High were named Bronze Star winners. MacArthur became the first high school to become a two-time winner.

The schools were each presented with a banner to recognize their awards. On hand to present the banners were Dr. Joseph Johnson, NCUST executive director, as well as executive coaches Barbara Balser, Dr. Karen Janney, Dr. Lynne Pérez and Dr. Shirley Peterson.

Aldine ISD won five of the 16 awards NCUST presented during the 2012-13 school year.

To date, NCUST has recognized 78 elementary, middle and high schools across the nation. Winning schools contribute to an ever-growing effort to understand how educators can create excellent urban schools for all students. To compete for the award, schools had to meet a long list of student performance criteria including achievement scores, high attendance rates, low suspension rates and high graduation rates for every demographic group of students.

The schools could not use any selective admission criteria to screen out less capable students. NCUST examined a variety of evidences of excellence including access to rigorous science, technology, engineering and mathematics education, student success in high-level programs and courses (e.g. advance placement programs), the academic proficiency of English language learners and the percentages of graduates demonstrating success in college.
