The nonprofit organization donated a boy and girl’s bike to every elementary school. The nonprofit donated more than 60 bikes. Steve Mead delivered the bikes to each campus. Mead is an Aldine Optimist Club member and is currently serving as the president of the Aldine Board of Trustees.

The schools will be awarding the bikes as prizes. Each elementary school is hosting a reading contest. For every book a student reads, he or she puts his or her name in the box for an opportunity to win a new bike. Rules of participation and award dates vary from campus to campus.

According to Stacey Smith, this is not the first time that the Aldine Noon Optimist Club has participated in the project. Smith serves as the program director of resource development for Aldine ISD.

“The Aldine Noon Optimist Club has helped us in the past to provide incentives to schools in this project,” said Smith. “But this was the first year that the club donated bikes to every campus participating in the reading contests. That is incredible. And I know the schools and the students appreciate it.”

One of the campuses that received bikes is Raymond Academy. Pictured are (l-r) Counselor Shalondra Moore, Board Trustee Steve Mead and Assistant Principal Delilah St. Julian.

“I thank Mr. Mead and everyone at the Aldine Noon Optimist Club for providing the bikes to give away as prizes,” said St. Julian. “It is truly wonderful to have an organization that supports literacy efforts such as this one.”
