Kujawa Elementary School Team Shines at Local U.S. Chess Federation Tournament

More than 400 chess players from area school districts and private schools took part.

Kujawa Elementary School chess players celebrate their wins.


[dropcap color=”#888″ type=”square”]T[/dropcap]he chess students at Kujawa Elementary School showed off their strategic skills. They played at the United States Chess Federation (USCF) Tournament held at the T.H. Rogers School.

Kujawa chess players formed part of the more than 420 players that took part. The players represented area school districts and private schools.  The tourney lasted 10 hours.

The [icons icon_name=”icon-external-link” icon_size=”14px”]Kujawa chess players won 11 individual trophies. The team placed 5th overall in the competition.


Chess teaches youth to make the right moves on the board, in the classroom and in life.

Teachers Roberto Velasquez and Diego Unigarro coach the chess students. The team is comprised of Ezequiel Aguilera, Javier Arista, Alfonso Bou, Isabella Chávez, Jonathan Contreras, Jesús Estrada, Leonardo Garza, Víctor Garza, Rey Hernández, Ángel de Jesús, Dayanara Nuñez, Alde Plata, Alonso Ramírez, Ashley Ríos, Jeremy Romero, Luis Silva, Ellen Tapia and Zaahir Yáñez.
