Volunteers team up to build community Playground at Kujawa Elementary School

On Saturday, March 4, more than 200 volunteers from Travelers and Kujawa Elementary School along with organizers from KaBOOM! and residents of the Houston community teamed up to build a new playground at the school.

Designed in January when children from the neighborhood put crayons to paper to draw their dream playground, the new play space includes a Trippple Racer Slide, Quattro See-Saw and Sky Link. The playground will bring 340,000 kids in Houston one step closer to having the childhood they deserve.

“Albert Einstein said, ‘Play is the highest form of research,’” said Debera Thomas, Kujawa Elementary School Principal. “At Kujawa, each time students enter this stimulating outdoor space, opportunities begin to explore, create, develop, to think, to be free, to open doors to the world.”

As part of the construction, volunteers assembled the playground from start to finish in less than six hours. They mixed and poured thousands of pounds of concrete and moved enough safety surfacing to cover more than 9 NBA-sized basketball courts.

Volunteers from Kujawa Elementary School, Travelers and KaBOOM! held a ribbon cutting ceremony following the construction of a new playground at the school. On hand for the ceremony was former Aldine ISD Superintendent and school namesake Nadine Kujawa, far left.
