Wayne Crawford named Generals head football coach

Wayne Crawford has been named the new head football coach and campus athletic coordinator at MacArthur High School.

Crawford succeeds former head coach Andy Garza.

Crawford, 51, spent last season as the Generals’ quarterback coach and brings 30 years of coaching experience to his new job.

The Los Angeles native spent 28 years coaching in California but had the desire to coach high school football in Texas.

“A friend told me, ‘you haven’t coached high school football until you’ve coached high school football in Texas.’ So, an opportunity came open here and I decided to make the move. Texas is definitely a great football state.”

During his tenure in Los Angeles, Crawford was the head coach at Locke High School for two years and Rancho Domingo Prep for five years. He made the playoffs six of the seven years he served as a head coach in LA.

Crawford said the Generals will run a spread offense and hopes to feature the running game and the 3-4 defense.

“We want to run the ball downfield and create running lanes,” he said. “We think we have the kids in place to be able to do that.”

Crawford said he wants the Generals to be aggressive on both sides of the ball.

“I believe in having a team that attacks on offense and defense,” Crawford said. “We want to be an attacking defense.”

Crawford played running back at Harbord College in Los Angeles and when his playing days were over, he decided to give coaching a try.

“I didn’t know what I was going to do after college and so I decided to give coaching a shot. I’m happy with my decision.”

Crawford said he wants to see the Generals become a 48-minute team. He said last year’s team had lapses in some games that cost them in the long run.

“I want us to be a more consistent team,” he said. “We were in most of our games last year, but we would have five or six minutes where we would have lapses. If we can get them to play a full 48 minutes, I think our fans will be happy with the results.”

Crawford and his wife JoAnne have four children, a son Jacob (7) and one-year-old triplets Jaziah, Jeateria and Jasiel.

Raising triplets and coaching doesn’t leave much free time for the likable Crawford, but when he does get a break he likes to exercise and spend time with his family.
