Six Aldine ISD students will have their works viewed by professionals and educators at the National Council for Supervisors of Math (NCSM) Conference set for April 23-25 in Washington, D.C.

NCSM is the premier organization for leadership in mathematics education. Members lead mathematics instructional programs around the United States and Canada. The 2018 theme for the conference is “Leading Mathematics Into the Future: Inspiring Monumental Change.”

This year, the NCSM is celebrating its 50th anniversary. According to Dr. Paul Gray, NCSM will feature student artwork and math work from all grade levels and from schools across the country as part of the celebration. Gray is the Southern 2 regional director for NCSM, which includes Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and Tennessee. He is also a former Aldine ISD teacher and a graduate from Eisenhower HS.

Student work will be featured at our annual sponsorsreception as well as at our 50th anniversary ceremony that will be held at the National Geographic Society,” Gray said. “Im proud and pleased that we will have artwork from Aldine ISD; particularly Ermel Elementary School where I was a student. Go Aldine!

NCSM challenged educators to challenge their students to create a piece of art to commemorate the anniversary. Students could write problems that end in 50, create equations that would graph or end in 50, and draw pictures or diagrams that relate to this in some way. Students could be as creative as they wanted to be. The piece of math art could be either 50th related, or NCSM related, or any combination thereof. NCSM will feature artwork from students from prekindergarten through higher education.

The 2018 NAEA Convention took place March 22-24 in Seattle, Washington. This year’s theme was “Art + Design = STEAM.”

Two works by Aldine ISD students in the State’s Capitol Youth Art Month (YAM) Exhibit were selected to form part of the 12 works chosen to represent Texas at the NAEA Convention. The lucky AISD students were kindergarten student Aliya Arriaga from Worsham Elementary School and seventh grade student Graciela Padrón from Drew Academy for Mathematics, Science and the Fine Arts.
