Aldine ISD Earns Highest CenterPoint Energy Rebate to Date

Aldine ISD was awarded more than $240,000 from CenterPoint Energy’s SCORE program as a result of the installation of high-efficiency HVAC and lighting equipment across the district. Andrew Scatizzi, CenterPoint Energy Program Manager for Energy Efficiency, and Marc Fowler, ClearRESULT Energy Efficiency Senior Program Consultant, presented a $241,503.79 check to Deon Samuels, Aldine ISD Energy and Facility Manager, to highlight the success of the program.

In 2018, the district began promoting energy efficiency by switching to energy-efficient products at 20 campuses and district buildings.

“Not only are we helping the environment but we are able to reallocate our resources directly to our classrooms,” said Selina Chapa, deputy superintendent. Chapa oversees the district’s operations departments including maintenance, facilities, transportation and the energy efficiency program. “These reimbursements become part of the district’s budget and the money is allocated to directly impact student outcomes.”

The combined energy projects save nearly 640 kilowatts of peak electricity demand and almost 3,000,000 kilowatt-hours of electricity consumption annually. Those changes are equivalent to removing over 2,000 tons of carbon dioxide from the air or the CO2 produced to power 250 residential homes every year.

CenterPoint Energy’s SCORE program provides school districts, higher education, and local governments with cash incentives for completing projects that reduce electric demand and save annual energy consumption.

According to Aldine Energy and Facility Manager Deon Samuels, this is the most the district has ever received and it is due directly to the relationship with CenterPoint Energy.

“It has been great to work with CenterPoint Energy on projects from pre-inspection to post-inspection,” said Samuels. “They have not only helped us secure rebates each year but have also helped us change our approach.”
