AISD Middle, High School Students Earn Recognition From Regional Scholastic Art & Writing Awards
Since 1923, the Awards have recognized the vision and talent of our nation’s youth.

[dropcap color=”#888″ type=”square”]R[/dropcap]ecipients of the Regional [icons icon_name=”icon-external-link” icon_size=”14px”]Scholastic Art & Writing Awards hail from across the area. They represent 18 school districts, 16 private schools, two charters and a home school.
Gold Key — Davis HS, José Cortés for “Agua”
The [icons icon_name=”icon-external-link” icon_size=”14px”]Harris County Department of Education sponsored the regional contest. Area students submitted a total of 8,177 entries. Aldine ISD had 48 students receive 50 Awards. Students can compete in 29 art and writing categories.

According to Andrea Segraves, there was a 40 percent increase in entries this year. Segraves is the special events coordinator at HCDE. She coordinated the regional Awards competition.
“This is a great opportunity for our young writers and artists,” said Segraves. “I thank all the community professionals who volunteered to judge the event. Everyone thanks the corporations and nonprofits for their support. It is wonderful to see how they value the talent of teens in our area.“
Gold Key — Carver HS, Cynthia Coronado for “Omni-erudite
The community will have a chance to celebrate the students’ achievements. HCDE invites the community to upcoming events celebrating nearly 900 regional Scholastic Art and Writing Gold and Silver Key Award recipients.
An awards ceremony for all Gold and Silver Key recipients will be held March 5 in the conference center at HCDE (6300 Irvington Blvd.). The writing ceremony will start at 10 a.m. and the art ceremony will take place at 2 p.m.
Gold Key artwork will be on exhibit at three locations:

Through the Awards, student recipients receive opportunities for recognition, exhibition, publication and scholarships. Last year, students across America submitted 300,000 original works.
Gold Key Awards will advance to the national level. The students will attend ceremonies at Carnegie Hall in New York City in June. Students also have a chance to win scholarships.
Dr. Michaelann Kelley is proud of the students and art programs in schools across the district. She also lauds the Scholastic Art and Writing Awards program. Kelley is the program director of fine arts in the school district.
“[icons icon_name=”icon-external-link” icon_size=”14px”]Aldine art students have done well in this program for years,” said Kelley. “This year is no exception. We have some incredibly talented students producing amazing artworks.

“I also have to laud the art educators. They are developing great, creative programs at their campuses. The Awards program represents a high point of artistic achievement for students. I hope the experience inspires them to continue to develop and hone their talents and skills.“
Kelley added that art educators incorporate writing in the classroom. It is part of the program’s cross-curricular teaching practices. The integration of writing strengthens students’ literacy skills and fosters creative thinking. Two art educators had a total of four students earn Honorable mentions for their writing.
“We are so proud of the students‘ creative writing talent,” said Kelley. “This is an incredible accomplishment. And a great demonstration of how [icons icon_name=”icon-external-link” icon_size=”14px”]cross-curricular teaching is effective. By integrating literacy strategies, we are developing a curriculum that fosters and engages students in creative thinking, literacy, and the visual arts.“

Awards alumni use their creativity to become successful in any number of ways. Alumni are leaders in many fields including journalism, medicine and finance. They also work in government and public service, the law, science and design.

Kelley also acknowledged the Board of Trustees for supporting art educators in developing curriculum that enhances learning and opportunities for students to showcase their talent.
Since its founding, the [icons icon_name=”icon-external-link” icon_size=”14px”]Awards have established an amazing track record. Alumni include artists Andy Warhol, Philip Pearlstein, Cy Twombly, Robert Indiana, Kay WalkingStick and John Baldessari; writers Sylvia Plath, Truman Capote, Bernard Malamud, Myla Goldberg and Joyce Carol Oates; photographer Richard Avedon; actors Frances Farmer, Robert Redford, Alan Arkin, Lena Dunham and John Lithgow; fashion designer Zac Posen; and filmmakers Stan Brakhage, Ken Burns and Richard Linklater.
Beyond the Awards, the Alliance for Young Artists & Writers produces a number of programs to support creative students and their educators, including theArt.Write.Now.Tour, the National Student Poets Program, the Scholastic Awards Summer Series, theAlliance Summer Arts Program, the Golden Educators Residency and much more.
