Aldine ISD Winners, Ángel Ramírez and Miguel González, Advance to Compete in Houston PBS 2017 Spelling Bee
The two magnet school students will compete against area spellers at the University of Houston on April 1.

[dropcap color=”#888″ type=”square”]S[/dropcap]ome of Aldine’s best spellers faced off last month in the District Spelling Bee. Students competed for a spot to advance to the Houston Public Media 2017 Spelling Bee.
Ángel Ramírez from Drew Academy earned the Champion title. The seventh-grader underwent an intense 12 rounds before winning with the word “belittle.”
Miguel González seen in 2015 at Harris Academy. He was the 2015 District Spelling Bee Champion.
The Runner-Up title went to sixth grade student Miguel González. The speller from Houston Academy beat his competitors in the 14th round. He won with the word “courtliness.” Miguel keeps winning with words. He was the [icons icon_name=”icon-external-link” icon_size=”14px”]District 2015 Champion while a student at Harris Academy.
Only campus winners advanced to the District event that took place at the M.O. Campbell Educational Center. Contestants must not have passed beyond the eighth grade on or before Feb. 1, 2017.
As the top two District winners, Ángel and Miguel advance to the next level of competition. The [icons icon_name=”icon-external-link” icon_size=”14px”]Houston Public Media 2017 Spelling Bee set for April 1 at the University of Houston. This year’s presenting sponsor is Wells Fargo. The event will stream live starting at 1:30 p.m. Viewers can also tune in in the evening. Final rounds will be live streamed at 7 p.m. and live broadcast on TV Channel 8 at 7 p.m.

Winners of the Houston Public Media Spelling Bee will earn a spot at the [icons icon_name=”icon-external-link” icon_size=”14px”]National Scripps Spelling Bee in Washington, D.C.
The 2017 Spelling Bee Champion will receive a $40,000 grand prize.
