Program Overview

What is a Two-Way Dual-Language immersion program?

Two-way Dual-Language (TWDL) is a program of choice within Aldine ISD and is an evidence-based approach for promoting biliteracy, bilingualism, and biculturalism for all students. The overarching goals are to develop listening, speaking, reading, and writing proficiencies in two languages, learn academic content in two languages, and to develop an appreciation for cultural diversity. Students with Spanish proficiency and students with English proficiency will learn alongside one another as they serve as language models for each other.

What are the benefits of Two-Way Dual-Language education?

The educational research on language learning supports that young children both learn and acquire second languages quite naturally. In the Aldine ISD model, the second language will be formally taught through structured language learning lessons and activities. Vocabulary and other skills will be learned through context, routines, and regular daily activities.

How can I learn more about the Two-Way Dual-Language program?

There will be informational meetings and campus tours in the Spring of 2024. Information will be offered in both English and Spanish. Please complete the following interest form by clicking here to receive more information and dates about the meetings and campus tours.

Will the teachers speak English or Spanish?

Teachers will strategically use both languages during daily instruction.

When do children in Two-Way Dual-Language programs become fluent in a second language (English or Spanish)?

Research shows that basic interpersonal communication skills in a second language are acquired within 3-5 years. The academic language used in school settings is usually acquired within 5-7 years. A long-term commitment to the program is necessary to see the complete benefits of the program.

Will my child learn the same subjects as students in other classes?

Yes, students will continue to receive instruction in the same subjects: language arts, mathematics, science, and social studies. The only difference is that children in this program will be learning these subjects in two languages.

Will learning a second language impact his or her overall success in school? Will he or she fall behind?

Learning a second language provides unique benefits that support academic success. Studies show that Two-Way Dual-Language students display greater academic, cognitive and social skills. Bilingual students are also able to communicate and interact with more people from around the world, giving them additional skills and confidence to function in a global society.

Enrollment

Who can enroll in the TWDL program?

Any students that will begin kindergarten in the 2024-2025 school year and are interested in the Two-Way Dual Language program are invited to apply to the program. Families will need to complete a commitment form.

Does my child need to have previous knowledge of or have the ability to speak Spanish to enroll in the Two-Way Dual-Language program?

No. Students with Spanish proficiency and students with English proficiency will learn alongside one another as they serve as language models for each other.

How will students be selected?

Due to the challenging nature of the DLI program, interested students will complete an assessment that measures their proficiency in their native language. Additionally, students must demonstrate an appropriate pattern of attendance, social readiness for learning in a school environment, and academic preparedness to learn in a rigorous academic program. The educational history of each student will also be reviewed as part of the selection process. Selected students will be notified of acceptance in May.

Is there a set number of students who can attend?

Aldine ISD is committed to offering our students additional choice and options. Spaces will be filled on a first come, first served basis according to the space available at each campus. As interest in the program grows, we will review District resources to add more classes at each campus or even at other locations.

What Aldine ISD schools offer the Two-Way Dual-Language program?

The Two-Way Dual Language program is offered in kindergarten classes at García-Leza, Vines, Hinojosa, Magrill and de Santiago schools. The District selected these campuses based on the ability for students to continue the program through high school. The program feeds into the following campuses, students will attend to the closest one to their residence:

• de Santiago → Black Elementary
• García-Leza → Escamilla Elementary
• Hinojosa → Thompson Elementary
• Magrill → Dunn Elementary
• Vines → Ermel Elementary

When are applications due?

Application window for the Two-Way Dual-Language program will be available from January 9 until March 31, 2024. Families will be notified of selection on Friday, May 17, 2024.

I do not live in Aldine ISD but I would love for my child to enroll in a Two-Way Dual-Language program. How do I apply?

We are excited about the program and anticipate that families in Aldine ISD will take advantage of the new program of choice. Students zoned to Aldine ISD schools will have access to the program first. If there is space available, students from outside the District will be able to apply, however transportation will not be provided.

Program Information and Expectations

What are the program expectations for parents?

Support from parents/families is key to the success of students enrolled in the Two-Way Dual-Language program. Throughout their enrollment parents will be asked to:

• Attend information sessions and program update meetings
• Commit to participation in the program for at least five years, ideally from kindergarten through 12th grade
• Understand, support, and advocate for biliteracy
• Model an appreciation for bilingualism, biliteracy, and multiculturalism

What are the program expectations for students?

The Two-Way Dual-Language immersion program is a rigorous learning opportunity for students. Students are expected to attend school, come prepared and ready to learn. They are also expected to:

• Adhere to the student code of conduct
• Good attendance
• Commit to participation in the program for at least five years, ideally from kindergarten through 12th grade
• Have a desire to learn more about other cultures
• Develop an appreciation for bilingualism, biliteracy, and multiculturalism

How will this type of instruction impact my child during state testing requirements?

Students in a bilingual program model are able to take state assessments in the language in which they would perform best. School administrators will work with each student to determine the best option for each one.

Will transportation be provided for students who are in the Two-Way Dual-Language program?

All Aldine ISD students, including kindergartners, who reside two or more miles (as measured along the shortest route that may be traveled on public roads) from their zoned campus are eligible for transportation services at District-designated stops.
